it can lift you up

one of my favorite songs from the reality bites movie soundtrack is 'bed of roses' by the indians-

it reminds me of simpler times. hanging out at the seaport with my sister and her friends when i was in high school. the days before i worked in new york city and became this stressed out person. but i'm not going to complain today. it's payday and i have a nice spacious apartment and a lot to be grateful for. i have food in my refrigerator that i paid for and a roof over my head, a warm bed to sleep in and a lovely boyfriend to see this weekend. i can forget about work for a while.

i'm really good at pretending to like my boss and job, though pretending on a daily basis gets really draining by the end of the day. i'm just grateful that my boss is not in the office every day and sometimes spends days at outside meetings and other community based offices. i'm grateful to have enough money to take a short road trip vacation at the end of march, and for the planning of a possible longer vacation in the spring for me and my bf's anniversary.

i just watched a documentary called 'picture me' about sara ziff, a model who filmed her rise in the modeling career, with the help of her boyfriend. she does a lot of unnecessary complaining. sure, it may be hard to work for 2 weeks straight with no weekend and have to get up at 5 or 6am and get to bed like at 1am, but then if you can take a week off to sleep and doing nothing else after fashion weeks are over, i really don't get what the big deal is.and getting to see milan 'only by night' as she says, is a hell of a lot better than never having the chance to travel anywhere at all.

and if you can make $80,000 or $111,300 for one day's work (2 actual check amounts that she earns in the movie) and be basically set for the next few years of your life, then i really don't see what the downside could be about that. she said she had all this money in savings and didn't know what to do with it so she decides to buy an apartment in New York at the age of 20. hello? some people out there are starving and in need of the basic necessities to live. ugh.

some young people who make a lot of money quickly just have no idea what it means to struggle, so they can't grasp the great chance they have to do something really good and meaningful. anyway. i would've liked to have seen her express some gratitude for her amazing opportunities, which had nothing to do with her intelligence or her interview skills or anything, just having the luck of being young and beautiful and thin and have someone discover her. but no, it's all 'oh what am i going to do with my life after this?' how about just live?

how about just sit back and enjoy the fact that you don't have to endure a 9 to 5 with a boss you hate and who talks down to you and treats you like an idiot and expects you to just take it day in and day out with aplomb?? how about enjoying the luxury of not having to work while you decide what your next great endeavor will be? i read some reviews of the movie that criticize the model featured for complaining about being young, beautiful, healthy and very well paid. they wrote 'cry me a river' and i couldn't help but think 'amen!'

there is a great guest post at this link-

the best line i've read in a long time is this (from that post):

'Learn what lights up your world before burnout defines it.'
