Would you work for someone who stresses you out even if the money was good?
i would not do this. it's not worth it to work for someone who stresses you out just for good money. good money means nothing if you're spending most of your time miserable. having lots of money in the bank won't bring you happiness, once you have your basic necessities covered i mean. i've never been a person to chase after a big paycheck. i would be happy having enough money to cover my expenses, and maybe a little left over, but nothing outrageous. i'd trade a high stress high paying job for a lower stress, lower paying job any day. my peace of mind and health mean a lot to me.
i thing my non-greediness is exemplified by the fact that i'm taking courses in relation to editing and the publishing field, which is notorious for low-paying salaries. but the work would be challenging enough for me to enjoy and feel like i'm using my mind and working at something i am good at. and there are some perks. the professor of my copyediting class said there is an opening for a copyeditor where she works. this position is for someone who can copyedit and do some writing, as well as manage some projects. the pay would be about 8k more a year than i currently make, and there is crazy vacation time.
she said you get a month off the day you walk in the door, so you could theoretically take a month off, after working there for a month. and the job offers a seven hour work day (35 hour work week) which is also great. and the atmosphere is very relaxed. that sounds pretty ideal to me. if i could somehow in my lifetime get a job with perks like that, i think i would be in heaven. a student in my class mentioned that at her publishing house, they take sick days on an honor system, meaning if an employee is sick, they just don't come in the office without even having to call in! i could not believe what i was hearing.
at my company, taking a sick day is practically a federal offense. it can get ridiculous. in the department where i used to work, we could not call in sick for a certain number of days, like 5 or something, and not on Mondays, or we would be written up and threatened that we'd lose our jobs! i'm grateful that it's not that way in my current department, but it's still hard to take time off without having to catch up on mountains of work, and disappointing the person you're working for, and still having to check emails on off days to make sure all your deadlines and responsibilities are taken care of.
i try to stay on top of things, but many of the people i work with tell me that they just give up. they do what they can and let the rest go and not worry about it. which is what i should try more to do. it's not easy!
